CHILD PROTECTION

ACE Nursery provides a welcoming and safe environment for children to play and develop. Our children’s needs are paramount and we are committed to safeguarding and promoting their welfare while meeting their individual needs. As professionals we have a duty to protect all children in our care from harm.
To meet our aims we will:
- Ensure all staff hold a current up to date DBS, have relevant qualifications and references are received before children are left in their care.
- Enrol students from known training providers only and check that they have had all relevant checks. They will be interviewed before attending the nursery and undergo an induction on their first day.
- Ensure all training available to members of staff will include Child Protection.
- Create an environment in which all children feel valued regardless of race, language, religion and culture.
- Encourage children to develop a positive self image, independence and confidence
- Develop strong positive relationships with parents/carers
- Ensure that all allegations of abuse are taken seriously and responded to appropriately
- Ensure that all staff will report any suspicions of abuse immediately to the Manager and the named Child Protection Officer.
- Display a list of relevant organisations to contact in the event of any child protection issues and a child protection procedure flowchart.
- Record, sign and date all accident, incidents and concerns.
- Ensure all allegations and information are kept confidential and are never discussed with anyone other than those directly involved.
- Ensure that the nursery is safe for children to use and all relevant checks are up to date.

Statement of Responsibility:
The named Child Protection Officer is TRACY BLACKBURN who has the responsibility of:
- Ensuring all staff, students and volunteers are aware of the organisations Child Protection Policy and procedures.
- Maintaining that all staff receive up to date information and training on Safeguarding Children issues
- Recording and logging all suspicions and allegations of abuse ensuring that it is signed and dated.
- Reporting all allegations and suspicions of abuse to the relevant bodies
- Taking any necessary actions immediately to ensure the safety of all children
- Attending Child Protection Case Conferences
- To ensure that all visitors to the setting sign the visitors book and are accompanied to the relevant person by a member of staff
- To liaise with the child’s parent/carer
- To abide by OFSTED requirements in respect of references and police checks for all staff, students and volunteers.
- In the event of the Child Protection Officer being absent the second named person is JENNY PARKER.
Staffing and Volunteers
- ACE Nursery ensure that they maintain child/staff ratios at all times which are:
0-2 years 1 adult to 3 children
2-3 years 1 adult to 4 children
3-5 years 1 adult to 8 children
- All relevant checks are carried out on all staff, students and volunteers to include completed application forms 3ontaining all personal details, qualifications, references and a completed and returned DBS.
- No person is left alone with children at any time if any checks are incomplete
- No member of staff, student or volunteer will be allowed to remain at the nursery if there is any issue of concern on any of the information or checks received
Disciplinary action relating to staff members:
- In the event of any suspicion, disclosure or concern relating to any member of staff they will be:
Suspended immediately pending further enquiries
All relevant organisations will be contacted including OFSTED and the local Safeguarding Children’s Board.
The organisations Allegations and Disciplinary Policy will be followed throughout the procedure.
Training
All staff will have regular access to up to date training courses on Safeguarding Children and Child Protection to ensure that they are able to recognise signs and symptoms of abuse and the procedure of recording and reporting information.
Curriculum
All activities that are planned for in the nursery should:
- Be age and stage appropriate.
- Create a culture of value and respect for all individuals
- Encourage children to develop an understanding of staying healthy, safe and caring for each other
- Encourage children to develop self-help skills enabling them to become independent.
*Staff should remember to praise and encourage children whenever possible.
Complaints
Parents/carers are aware of how to make a complaint through our complaints policy/procedure which is included in the written contract that they sign on registration and information displayed around the nursery.
- All complaints are taken seriously and are investigated
- Information received is recorded and shared with all relevant bodies
- Investigations will be carried out sensitively and in confidence
- The correct procedure will be carried out on all complaints
- The outcome of any complaint will be shared with all persons involved
- OFSTED will be made aware of complaints received
- Staff will not question children or members of staff throughout or following a complaint.
Concerns about a Child:
- All staff are aware of the possible signs of abuse and neglect through training and up to date information they receive.
- Staff have a good knowledge of our Safeguarding Children Policy and know the correct procedure of reporting any concerns
- Information on the child can be gained through discussion with the child’s key person and/or their parent/carer.
- Any concerns about a child should be discussed with the named Child Protection Officer who will complete a report form then decide on what action will be taken.
- If there continues to be concerns the relevant organisations would be contacted immediately
- Staff should never question the child
When recording suspicions of abuse or disclosure staff should record:
- The child’s name
- The child’s address
- Age
- People involved
- Time/date of the observation or disclosure
- Observation or disclosure
- Exact words or conversation
- Name of the person making the concern
- Signed and dated
All steps of the investigation should be recorded dated and filed with access only made available to relevant persons.
If a child transfers to another setting all child protection records should be passed on including any on-going concerns.
Disclosures:
Any child that makes a disclosure should:
- Be reassured and supported
- Be listened to at all times
- Not be questioned
- Never stop a child who is freely recalling significant events
Allegations against staff:
If an allegation is made against a member of staff, student or volunteer they will be suspended immediately pending further inquiries.
- Members of the Board, OFSTED and Child Protection Team will be informed of the allegation.
- The police may be informed of the allegation
- The accused person will be interviewed by the manager or Child Protection Officer and a report will be written
- Statements will be collected from all persons that witnessed the allegation
- The child protection team will carry out an investigate and decide on action to be taken
- The accused person should not return to the setting until the investigation is complete
- If the accused person is found guilty the company disciplinary procedure will be followed
- OFSTED would be kept informed throughout the investigation
Informing Parents:
- Parents will be made aware of any suspicions or concerns and what action the setting will be taking in the event of an allegation or disclosure.
- They will be kept informed of any further development and professionals involved.
- In cases of disclosures made involving parents/carers the investigating officer will inform them directly.
Confidentiality:
All suspicions/disclosures and incidents will remain confidential to the persons involved on a need to know basis, all reports and files will be filed in a locked cabinet.
Support to families:
- ACE Nursery work in partnership with parents and carers and take every step to build trusting and supportive relationships with them.
- The nursery will continue to welcome the child and family during any investigation that is being carried out in relation to suspicion, disclosure and/or abuse.
- Child’s confidential records will be shared with the parent/carer if appropriate.
- The nursery will do all they can to support all families in the event of any disclosure or incident, however the child’s care and safety is paramount to us and information will be shared where possible.
Supporting staff, students and volunteers:
ACE Nursery will support any member of staff; student or volunteer involved in any aspect of child protection and if necessary seek support from outside agencies
ACE Nursery will inform OFSTED of any allegations of serious harm and/or abuse and the action that they have taken as soon as reasonably practical, or within 14 days of the allegation being made

Our aim is to ensure that all children’s needs are fully met and they have the best possible start in life.
We will:
- Ensure that all children are treated equally
- Encourage children to share and take turns
- Follow the correct guidelines when dealing with children’s behaviour
- Praise and encourage children at all opportunities
- Ensure that all activities are suitable to all children’s age and stage of development
- Promote respect and kindness towards others
- Maintain up to date records of children’s development, sharing the information with the children’s parents/carers
- Ensure Policies are reviewed and updated on a regular basis.
- Ensure that children are cared for in a happy, safe and clean environment
- Record all accidents that occur ensuring that parent/carers are informed when they collect their child
- Record any incident that causes concern, taking appropriate action where needed
We will never:
- Use raised voices towards a child or any other persons
- Smack, physically punish or restrain a child
- Request additional support for a child without the consent of the parent/carer.
- Disclose any confidential issues with other parents, carers or visitors
PARENTS AND CARERS
To enable us to care for your child and maintain that they receive the best possible start
You should:
- Discuss any relevant information that may reflect on your child’s development, behaviour and learning
- Discuss with your child’s keyperson if you have any concerns about your child’s development
- Work in partnership with the nursery sharing any ideas, comments and suggestions
- Inform us if your child is being collected by someone else, giving a brief description of the person and informing them of your child’s password
- Ensure that your child is collected on time, notifying the nursery if you are going to be late so that your child can be reassured
- Inform a manager if you have any worries, concerns or complaints so that they can be dealt with immediately
You should not:
- Shout at or use any form of physical punishment towards your child or any other child/children in the nursery
- Display any threatening or aggressive behaviour towards staff, children, other parents/carers or visitors to the setting including the use of inappropriate language
- Discuss any confidential or sensitive issues in the presence of your child, other children and adults
- Smoke on or around the nursery premises
- Take photographs or videos of other children in the nursery
- Attempt to collect your child from the setting if you have consumed alcohol or taken any medication or drugs that may affect your judgement or responses
VISITORS AND CONTRACTORS
Should:
- Show their badge or form of identification when visiting the setting
- Sign the Visitors Book when entering and leaving the building
- Work only in the areas that is instructed by the Managers
- Respect children’s privacy especially around the bathroom areas
- Treat children with respect at all times
- Ask permission before joining in any games or play, adult interaction may not always be suitable
- Discuss with the Manager if you have any concerns or issues regarding children’s wellbeing or staff conduct
- Remember confidentiality
Should not:
- Shout or physically abuse a child. Staff should be informed immediately if you have any issues so that they can deal with it.
- Give cuddles, sit a child on your lap or carry a child around
- Use inappropriate language or display any aggressive or threatening behaviour

ACE Nursery offer children a wide variety of activities, which is planned for weekly. ACE understands the importance of delivering high quality education that promotes all 7 areas of child development which are.
- Personal, Social & Emotional Development (PSED)

- Communication & Language (CL)
- Literacy (L)
- Mathematics (M)
- Understanding the World (UW)
- Expressive Arts & Design (EAD)
All staff are responsible for the planning, staff in each room plan for their children’s individual needs. The Operations Manager oversees all the Learning Journey’s and makes sure that all planning sheets are completed by the keypersons and activities comply with the EYFS standards. All staff work closely with the Early Years Team to offer children of all ages and ability the best learning and development opportunities.
Staff will undergo training courses when available to support EYFS and planning etc, all training undertaken is shared with other staff, evaluated and logged in the Training and Development File.
Activities are reviewed on a regular basis to ensure children are still receiving the best learning opportunities and activities are varied to include festivals and other important events – such as birthdays etc.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS
Parent involvement is an essential addition to the nursery setting. It is the policy of ACE to work alongside parents/carers to provide the best possible care for their children.
All parent/carers are welcome to visit ACE Nursery during opening hours. Time will then be set aside if convenient to discuss any issues or concerns that may need addressing, all issues can be discussed in private and anything said will be received in confidence however some information received may need to be passed on to the relevant authorities.
We try to encourage all parent/carers to participate in the nursery environment.
To achieve good working relationships with parents we aim to provide:
- A warm and friendly welcome
- Information on the Early Years Foundation Stage and how it is used in the nursery
- First contact to parents of any development issues that their child may have and information of how their child will be assessed and who may be involved e.g. Early Intervention Team, Senco, parents will be involved throughout the assessments.
- Access children’s personal records and Development Files
- The opportunity to make appointments with children’s Keyperson to discuss their development.
- Encourage parents/carers to become more involved in their child’s daily care and learning
- Access to all ACE Nursery Policies, Operational Plan and latest OFSTED report.
- Opportunities to offer suggestions, comments and concerns either verbally, by email, telephone or post. (we have a post box in the reception area along with comment slips)
- Availability to talk to a Manager and discuss any concerns, queries and problems
- Up to date information to parents via Newsletters, letters, emails, telephone calls and notices on any changes in the nursery e.g. changes in Nursery Nurses, new developments, etc
- Information and encouragement for parents to extend their child’s learning and development and discuss achievements and concerns with their child’s Keyperson.
ALL PARENTS CONTRIBUTIONS, SUGGESTIONS, COMMENTS AND CONCERNS ARE CONFIDENTIAL, VALUED AND TREATED WITH RESPECT.

Time will then be set aside if convenient to discuss any issues or concerns that may need addressing, all issues can be discussed in private and anything said will be received in confidence however some information received may need to be passed on to the relevant authorities.
We try to encourage all parent/carers to participate in the nursery environment.
To achieve good working relationships with parents we aim to provide:
- A warm and friendly welcome
- Information on the Early Years Foundation Stage and how it is used in the nursery
- First contact to parents of any development issues that their child may have and information of how their child will be assessed and who may be involved e.g. Early Intervention Team, Senco, parents will be involved throughout the assessments.
- Access children’s personal records and Development Files
- The opportunity to make appointments with children’s Keyperson to discuss their development.
- Encourage parents/carers to become more involved in their child’s daily care and learning
- Access to all ACE Nursery Policies, Operational Plan and latest OFSTED report.
- Opportunities to offer suggestions, comments and concerns either verbally, by email, telephone or post. (we have a post box in the reception area along with comment slips)
- Availability to talk to a Manager and discuss any concerns, queries and problems
- Up to date information to parents via Newsletters, letters, emails, telephone calls and notices on any changes in the nursery e.g. changes in Nursery Nurses, new developments, etc
- Information and encouragement for parents to extend their child’s learning and development and discuss achievements and concerns with their child’s Keyperson.
